Who killed Frank? The hunt is on in Weatherfield

coro murder suspects 300x166 Who killed Frank? The hunt is on in WeatherfieldThose in charge of producing the popular soap Coronation Street have recently released a picture which  shows those people who are suspected of murdering the character Frank Foster.

In one of next week’s episodes, Frank Foster, who is played by Andrew Lancel, is going to be found dead. In recent episodes he has been involved in numerous confrontations and arguments, with both his enemies and friends.

After his murder local residents, as well as the police, are going to start looking at the characters who seem to have motive for killing Foster. These include Peter, Sally, Michelle, Carla and Kevin.

The writers of the show have said that after an intense amount of investigation, one of these five people is going to be arrested. The fans of the television show are not yet going to be told whether the police have caught the right man yet and they are going to be left wondering whether the real killer has managed to get away with the crime.

In recent episodes Frank has been made something of a hated figure in Weatherfield. He was acquitted of raping Carla and even after this crime he proceeds to con her out of her financial share in their factory.

Another suspect is Michelle, who has always been friends with Carla. It is thought that maybe she decided to avenge Carla by murdering Frank. It is also possible that Sally did the deed because she was expecting to lose her job after the sale of the factory. Frank also betrayed her in a very personal way and it is possible that this is what pushed her over the top and to murder him.

Of course, it is also possible that Peter Barlow is responsible for the murder. The two characters have hated each other for a long time and Frank has been responsible for serious hardships in Peter’s life. There is little question among the audience that Peter has enough hate to murder Frank. Current speculation among the audience is that Michelle did the killing but of course, there are many twists and turns yet to come.

Joel Kinnaman signs to play the new Robocop

robocop2 120224194232 200x134 120303161350 Joel Kinnaman signs to play the new RobocopThe speculation is over, and MGM have now officially signed Joel Kinnaman to play the iconic title role on the new Robocop film.

Jose Padhila, the director of two Elite Squad action films is the man at the helm of this remake, and Strike Entertainment partners Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce, the script comes courtesy of Josh Zetumer.

It was revealed by Deadline that MGM had offered the role to Kinnaman, who was more than happy to step into the shoes of Peter Weller, who played the role in the 1987 original that was directed by Paul Verhoeven. Kinnaman’s most notable recent performance was alongside Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds in Daniel Espinosa’s Safe House.

Kinnaman was first really taken notice of on the AMC series The Killing, having previously starred in Shabba Cash, another Espinosa vehicle. Hollywood are harkening back to the old days and seeking actors they can build their films around and Kinnaman, who is represented by UTA and Shelley Browning from Magnolia Entertainment, certainly seems to have found his golden ticket.

Strange Prometheus trailer released

Prometheus movie 150x150 Strange Prometheus trailer releasedThe TED conference is currently being held at Long Beach and Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof have developed this video to show at the conference.

It is not taken from the upcoming Prometheus production but it does show the character of Peter Weyland who is played by Guy Pearce. The video is very elaborate and the website that can be seen advertised at the end of the piece is actually live.

It is interesting to see how the mythology of the Prometheus production is being mixed in with the real world. This short video about the film is a great way for the creators to show audiences what is coming up without releasing any actual video from the film.

The film, which is being created by Fox, is set to be released this summer and is being highly anticipated by fans of Ridley Scott’s previous films.

Martin Scorcese; the director for the people

Taxi Driver poster 213x300 Martin Scorcese; the director for the peopleNow that Oscar time is with us once again, we start berating over which actors should win, and put our opinions forward about which great actors get overlooked and who should have several statuettes on their mantelpiece by now.

The fact is that it is not only actors that get passed over, but also great directors. It came as a huge surprise to many that the 2007 prize was the first ever Oscar for one of the greatest directors of all time; Martin Scorcese.

Scorcese’s CV reads like a top ten list of some of the greatest films ever made; Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, The Aviator, Gangs of New York, Goodfellas, not bad for an Italian/American from Queens. Much of Scorcese’s works have addressed his own ancestry, and he has notably cast actors with the same heritage; Robert De Niro, Leonardo de Caprio and Ray Liotta to name a few.

His films also contain themes such as Roman Catholicism and the church’s concepts of redemption and guilt, modern crime, machoism and violence. His heroes are never typical good guys, but such is their creation that you find yourself empathising with, and rooting for, these anti heroes such as the socially inept Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, a man with no real redeeming features but you feel his pain as he battles inner demons.

It is this kind of character development that makes Martin Scorcese stand out in the crowd. You are never left wondering, or feeling unfulfilled, his films are complete stories that evoke emotions, attack your senses and in some case leave you reeling and unable to comprehend what you have just seen. His take on the mafia and gangsters are graphically intense with characters you would hate in real life, but are taken into their world and embrace it.

Now 69, Scorcese’s latest effort, for which he has received yet another Oscar nomination, is the quirky and thought provoking Hugo, about a small boy who lives in the clocks of a French railway station. While some have criticised Hugo and said that Scorcese has lost his edge, there are still his distinctive signatures in place in terms of the character development and the uncertainty of what is coming next.

Whoever has the 2012 Oscar for best direction on their shelf this week is immaterial, the legacy of work that Scorcese has given us will live on in film lovers forever, long after the dust has collected on that once gleaming statuette.

How to smell like an A-lister

There doesn’t seem to be a week goes by without a new product being launched that either a celebrity is endorsing, or have created themselves. This is nothing new, and film stars have appeared in ads for everything from spot cream to lipstick, but the fastest growing sector for celebs, is without a doubt, perfume. Take a trip to any store and you will see as many celebrity fragrances as you do traditional brands.

Back in the 1950′s, stars such as Audrey Hepburn and Joan Crawford both appeared in advertising material for well known brands, and we all know the famous quote from Marilyn Monroe when she was asked what she wore in bed! The first celebrity to ever actually put their name to a fragrance was the inimitable Elizabeth Taylor back in 1991, and it was a huge global success.

Actors, singers, models, you name it and there is a perfume carrying their names. In much the same way as we buy make-up endorsed by these stars because we want to look like them, we buy their perfumes as we also want to smell like them. We see our favourite stars on the red carpet and just know that they are surrounded by a gentle cloud of fabulous fragrance, and we want that.

Some celebrities, such as Victoria Beckham, have diversified into fashion with amazing success. Long regarded as the clothes horse of the Spice Girls, she has proved to be a better designer than anyone ever thought she would be. Brand Beckham has gone global, and while her perfumes are still good sellers, her clothes are being worn by more A listers than probably even she ever imagined.

For every success however, there are the inevitable failures, and there is many a perfume with a celebrity name attached sitting in a bargain basket. This goes to prove that while we may get excited about our favourite celebrities launching a new scent, they still have to smell good. You can be the biggest celebrity in the world but if your perfume smells like toilet cleaner nobody will want to wear it.

Brave movie trailer

Brave is an upcoming film scheduled to be released during June 2012 that explores the nature of epic battles and mystical legends inScotlandsince the ancient times. The film’s trailer represents one unsuccessful attempt by an archer followed by a successful attempt to the target of another archer mainly by mistake.

While everything seems balanced at this point, it does not seem like it to Merida, the main protagonist within the story, that in order to “shoot for her own hand” shoots three arrows which all of them precisely hit the aimed target successfully. During the first attempt, Merida’s dress opens up helping her to directly hit the target. The second attempt goes equally as successfully as well as the third one without any aid. The queen tries to stop her and looks at her angrily once all the three arrows have been shot by Merida.

I Saw The Devil Review

I Saw The Devil Review I Saw The Devil Review

I Saw The Devil Review

I Saw the Devil, the 6th full length feature from Jee-Woon Klm, the Korean director, tells the tale of a secret service agents whose wife and unborn child have been brutally slain in a sickening act of violence, and his campaign of terror aimed at the man responsible. He blindly goes after this serial killer who knows no bounds, yet by raining hurt upon the one who ruined his life, he risks becoming his latest victim.

Klm was also the man responsible for the acclaimed A Tale of Two Sisters, and if that film gave an indication of the darkness he was capable of, he spreads his black wings with style in this latest offering. Rarely does a film live up to a brilliant title, but this one of those rarities.

In Two Sisters, Klm created a world of subtlety and nuances, whereas Devil is a volcano of heartbreak, hopelessness and violence, and is one of the most exciting, entertaining and closest things to perfection that we have seen for a long long time, or likely to see any time soon.

From the moment it was announced that production of this masterpiece was starting, and the team behind was revealed, there has been a buzz around this film. Particularly when one of the two men carrying this film is the brilliant Min-Sik Choi, who has been at the forefront of the game since he appeared in the cult classic Oldboy. He is a formidable presence of screen and pulls no punches in his performances.

He reaches both careers highs, and lows, in his portrayal of the utterly despicable and morally bankrupt killer Kyung-chul. What he gets up to during I Saw The Devil will make you feel physically sick, yet such is is mastery that he manages to make this monster remains human, albeit a disgusting one.

He never comes across as a film villain either, he remains all to real, the sad reality is that he could live around the corner, and all his actions here are very reality based.  He is the black and demonic yang to the yin that is provided by Byung-hun Lee, the secret service agent who has everything to look forward to in life until his world is viciously torn apart.

Lee also puts in a memorable performance, he has a calm and restrained demeanour that masks a torrent of hurt and hatred within him that he can’t control, not that he wants to. Vengeance is his driving force and he sure lays it on thick. These outstanding leads are superbly supported by a superb cast who flesh out this sick and sordid world to perfection, one stand out being Gook-hwan Jeon playing Kim-Soo’s father in law.

I Saw The Devil is a superbly crafted horror in the true sense of the genre. A great story, powerful acting and enough blood and gore to satisfy even the most blood thirsty viewers. We are asked questions such as is revenge really the answer, and the answer isn’t as straightforward as it would seem. Bold, daring and thoroughly enthralling, I Saw The Devil should be on everyone’s ‘must see’ list.

Chop is obviously a Hostel inspired film

WFTCRMImageFetch Chop is obviously a Hostel inspired filmWith its inspiration seeming to come from Hostel, or Saw, or any film in which a bad guy is systematically chopped up by an even worse guy, Chop has the feeling of a humorous short that was stretched into a full feature with an 81 minute running time.

Although you can see the stretch marks on occasion, and they aren’t always pretty, there is still an awful lot to like about this film, thanks to its central hook.

The premise is simple; a lunatic has kidnapped a nasty and selfish man in order for him to make his prisoner apologise for something unpleasant that happened years previously. In the selfish jerks defence, he hasn’t a clue what the lunatic is raving on about, which only makes matters worse.

After witnessing a few of his family members being horrifically murdered, our selfish none hero starts to admit things to the lunatic that have nothing at all to do with him, and  this is were Chop starts getting funny. Yes, this is a horror/comedy, but your typical horror with the odd quips thrown in for good measure, Chop, to its credit, is a dark yet broad farce punctuated with frequent scenes of grandiose carnage.

Not all of the jokes hit the mark, and Chop overstays its welcome by several minutes, but during its best moments you could be mistaken for thinking you were watching something written by Eli Roth and Neil Simon due to the rapid banter and the kooky misunderstandings that lead to some over the top blood letting and quite shocking violence.

The leads are also on the green side, but they are often amusing as they are fully committed to this slice of low budget lunacy. Chop is unlikely ever to be thought of as a masterful blend of comedy and horror, but there is something to be said for a little indie film that manages to keep both plates spinning for the vast majority of the running time.

Overall, Chop is a  lot of fun with a good amount of horror thrown in, creating a low budget mash up of genres that you know you are going to click with or not within the first few minutes. Flawed?, yes, hugely enjoyable?, absolutely.
